Introduction to Electrical Power and Power Electronics By Mukund R. Patel.

About:

This book is the first comprehensive volume of its kind focusing on all of these topics, which are directly related to most energy engineers on a daily basis. Additionally, engineers working in renewable energy technologies will also find this book useful because an electric power system for extracting energy from wind and ocean currents is a mirror image of the variable frequency motors that drive pumps, propellers, and ship propellers.

There is no single book available that covers the entire spectrum of electrical power systems and power electronics. Traditional textbooks on power systems have focused on high voltage transmission, with only a few power engineers participating. The vast majority of power engineers work in cities and towns, large factories, steel mills, commercial and institutional buildings, refineries, data centers, railways, shipping ports, commercial and marine vessels, etc. They often handle power taken from the utility company or are often self-generated to power motors and other loads via transformers, cables, and protective devices such as fuses and circuit breakers.
The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and many other countries are currently suffering from a shortage of energy engineers. The shortage is expected to worsen in the United States, where about 45% of electrical power engineers will qualify for retirement before 2020. They will require about 7,000 fresh energy engineering graduates to replace them and a roughly equal number in supporting industries. At the same time, many countries are making huge investments in building new power plants and power grids that will require more power engineers to service the industry. It is this trend that college students are now again attracted to electric power programs. No other technology has brought about greater change to the electric power industry and still has the potential for more future improvements than power electronics. Power electronics equipment prices have fallen to about 1/10 since the late 1980s, leading to rapid growth in their applications throughout the power industry.
Power plant ratings for large cruise ships are close to 100 megawatts due to their use of electric propulsion with abundant power electronics. The world's navies have begun to switch from mechanical to electric propulsion, using power electronics for the many benefits they offer. With high-powered combat weapons on board, they would require power plants of a larger size comparable to those on Earth. So far, they also routinely handle batteries of various electrical installations, power electronics transformers of all kinds, variable frequency drive motors, etc.
