Principles of Electric Machines and Power Electronics Third Edition

Electrical machines play an important role in industry as well as in our daily life. They are used in power plants to generate electric power, and in industry to provide mechanical works, such as steel mills, textile mills, and paper mills. They are an indispensable part of our daily life. They start our cars and power many of our home appliances. The average home in North America uses a dozen or more electric motors. Electrical machines are very important pieces of equipment. Electrical machines are taught, very justifiably, in almost all universities and technical colleges around the world. In some places, more than one semester is offered in Electrical Machines. This book has been written in such a way that the teacher can choose their subjects to deliver one or two semester courses in electrical machines. The first few sections in each chapter are devoted to the basic principles of the process. Later sections are often devoted to a more detailed study of a particular machine. If a one-semester course is offered, the teacher can choose the subjects presented in the elementary sections and / or the preliminary sections of the sections in each semester. Subsequent sections and / or later portions of departments may be covered in the second semester course. The instructor can skip the sections, without losing continuity, depending on the subject. Linear induction motors (LIM) and synchronous linear motors (LSM), currently popular for application in transmission systems, are introduced. Both voltage and current source equivalent circuits are used to power a synchronous machine to predict its performance. The operation of autonomous synchronous motors for use in variable speed drive systems is discussed. Inverter control of induction machines and the effects of time and place combinations on induction motor operation are discussed with examples.
